Well... something had to go wrong somewhere, right? This trip would've been too good to be true if it didn't.
As much as I love exploring new places, the actual traveling part has always been rough for me. Unless I'm doing a big roadtrip with friends and kind of in charge of transportation and driving (such as the epic Bridges Ski Bum weekends), it's hard for me to actually transport from one place to another. I love planes and I love driving, but when I'm not in control of it, I feel like something wrong happens.
Earlier on Friday, I had a minor panic attack due to the fact that I couldn't check us in online. The website said the flight had been "closed." Ummm... what? How could it be closed? Did the airline overbook? Immediate panic set in, and after 30 minutes of talking with the Avianca staff, we had our seats and boarding passes. Crisis averted...
The four hour bus ride down wasn't all that terrible. Let's just say I'll take a screaming baby over bright cellphone screens and constant ringing any night of the week.
Finally, we arrived in JFK Airport in NYC around midnight. The taxi ride (even though it was $60) wasn't bad at all. But we are definitely feeling tired after a long day of last-minute packing and traveling. We arrive to the check-in gate to discover that our flight that was scheduled to depart at 6:40 am had been delayed. Delayed! AHH! Of course the one thing that I wanted to be picture perfect was going to be messed up. So instead of flying out at 6:40 am, our flight is now scheduled for 1:00 pm. That meant that we had 12 glorious hours to spend in JFK airport. Around 5:30, some of the restaurants and coffee shops began to open, and (as always) I'm craving for a mimosa. I've tried to get as much sleep as possible, but the airport cushioned seats aren't the most comfortable to sleep in.
It's now 8:30 am, and I need to go exchange my money. The good news is that we no longer have such a long layover in Bogota, Colombia, and we will still arrive in Cuzco at 7:30 am on Sunday, March 2.
The next time I will update will be from Cuzco! See you then!
JFK Airport at 2 am... It's a party.
